The Army has been left 2,000 troops short amid chaos at the private firm in charge of hiring soldiers as Britain faces a Christmas terror alert.
Capita has paid millions of pounds in penalties to the Ministry of Defence over the last six months for its failures in recruiting the men and women desperately needed by British regiments.
In one month alone it had to stump up £750,000 for failing to meet targets.
A source close to Capita said last night: “Capita has failed to meet Army recruitment requirements and it couldn’t come at a worse time. The truth is we don’t have enough soldiers to deal with the current terror crisis.”
